Perform work related to accounting according to three levels of increasing responsibility complexity and pay grades. The tasks range from entry level professional accounting duties and preparation of financial statements to specialized accounting work at the technical lead level. Each higher level includes all duties from the lower levels.
Representative Essential Duties

Accountant I

Maintains financial records accounts ledgers and journals

Reviews and analyzes accounting/fiscal data and records/reports from department/divisions of the Board of County Commissioners or the Office of the Clerk & Comptroller as part of a financial operations division
- Prepares standard journal entries and posts transactions to proper accounts
- Prepares summaries trial balances and related reports and statements for assigned division
- Receives funds prepares deposits and reconciles bank statements
- Conducts field audits within the scope of assigned financial division
- Reconciles and balances financial statements inter-fund transfers grants and accounting records and ledgers
- Composes correspondence
- Performs related work as required
Accountant II
In addition to the tasks of an Accountant I:
- Performs more complex accounting functions and activities including disbursements budget development and analysis revenue accounting and preparation of statistical and/or fiscal reports
- Prepares nonrecurring accounting entries and adjustments
- Assists in the preparation of complex analysis and reports on accounting problems or projects
- Participates in the planning and organization of accounting and financial activities within an assigned area program and/or system
- Participates in formulating evaluating monitoring and implementing accounting and budgetary policies systems controls and procedures
- Helps to coordinate activities within the division to ensure adequate flow of pertinent information
- Assists in the preparation of operating budgets
- Provides advice and assistance to the division on a variety of accounting problems
- Performs related work as required
Accountant III
In addition to the tasks of an Accountant I and II:
- Provides direction control and supervision of assigned accounting and financial functions programs and systems including disbursements budget development and analysis revenue accounting and preparation of statistical and fiscal reports; may manage related functions
- Provides consultation as a technical lead and manages subordinates on specific accounting functions
- Coaches leads mentors guides trains and assists as needed to ensure effective and timely completion of assignments
- Conducts complex analysis and prepares reports on accounting problems or projects
- Reviews and approves nonrecurring accounting entries and adjustments
- Works with the department director assistant director and various division managers to coordinate the preparation and submission of schedules reports and data to auditing agencies
- Acts as a lead in evaluating the effectiveness of and recommending changes to existing accounting and budgetary policies procedures controls and systems and monitors their implementation
- Assists the division manager in evaluating the performance of subordinate staff
- Provides advice and assistance to Clerk & Comptroller and County departments and divisions on a variety of accounting problems
- Coordinates activities with other departments and agencies to ensure adequate flow of pertinent information
- Performs related work as required
This position is generally posted as a Level I and the teammate follows a defined production-based progression to the next level.
Verifiable related work experience may be substituted in lieu of postsecondary educational requirements if a candidate is otherwise qualified for the position. Related work experience may not substitute for any required licensure certification or registration required for the position. Substitution of postsecondary educational requirements is authorized as follows:
Level I
- Graduation from high school or possession of an accredited equivalency diploma AND six (6) years of government auditing or accounting AND the ability to pass skills tests such as typing spelling grammar and math within one (1) year OR;
- Associate Degree AND three (3) years of government auditing or accounting AND the ability to pass skills tests such as typing spelling grammar and math within one (1) year OR;
- Bachelor Degree in related field (Auditing or Finance) AND the ability to pass skills tests such as typing spelling grammar and math within one (1) year; OR
- Bachelor Degree AND one (1) year of government auditing or accounting experience AND the ability to pass skills tests such as typing spelling grammar and math within one (1) year.
Level II
- Associate Degree AND four (4) years of government auditing or accounting AND the ability to pass skills tests such as typing spelling grammar and math within one (1) year OR;
- Bachelor Degree AND two (2) years of government auditing or accounting AND the ability to pass skills tests such as typing spelling grammar and math within one (1) year OR;
- Masters Degree AND one (1) year of government auditing or accounting AND the ability to pass skills tests such as typing spelling grammar and math within one (1) year OR:
- Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) AND one (1) year of government auditing or accounting AND the ability to pass skills tests such as typing spelling grammar and math within one (1) year.
Level III
- Bachelor Degree AND four (4) years of government auditing or accounting AND the ability to pass skills tests such as typing spelling grammar and math within one (1) year OR;
- Masters Degree AND three (3) years of government auditing or accounting AND the ability to pass skills tests such as typing spelling grammar and math within one (1) year OR:
- Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) AND three (3) years of government auditing or accounting AND the ability to pass skills tests such as typing spelling grammar and math within one (1) year.
Positions may be required to train teammates.
A valid driver’s license is required.
Complete employment history for at least 10 years is required.
